What is a Network Dentist?

SuperToothFinal_network dentistA network dentist, also known as an in-network dentist, is a dental care provider who has contracted with your dental insurance company to offer services at pre-negotiated rates. These dentists agree to charge you less than their usual fees, and your insurance plan typically covers a higher percentage of the cost when you visit a network dentist.

Obtaining your dental care from a network provider will give you the full insurance benefits and the most value for your money. You typically save money when using a network dentist compared to an out-of-network dentist.

Examples:

  • If your dentist is in-network, you might pay only a portion of the cost for a filling, while the insurance company covers the rest based on the agreed rates. Your dentist will not charge you for the balance between the agreed rates and the dentist’s regular rates.
  • If you visit an out-of-network dentist, your out-of-pocket costs will most likely be higher because the insurance benefit is lower, and you will be responsible for the balance of the costs.

FAQs

  • Why should I use a network dentist? Using a network dentist can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket expenses and maximize your insurance benefits.
  • How can I find a network dentist? Most insurance companies provide a list of network dentists on their websites or through customer service. Delta Dental’s Find-A-Dentist tool makes finding a network dentist in your area quick and easy.

When you call the dental office to make an appointment, be sure to ask: “Are you a network (or in-network) provider of [name of my] dental insurance company?”

Never ask your dentist (or doctor) this question

  • What happens if I use an out-of-network dentist? Your out-of-pocket expenses are usually higher compared to in-network dentists.

Example of In-Network Dental Service and Claim

This chart shows a hypothetical claim of a preventive service with an in-network dentist:

Network dentist claim

  • The in-network dentist has agreed to discount his regular fee by $63.07.
  • The dental insurance pays the balance of $56.93.
  • You, as a member, pay nothing.
