What is a Copay?

SuperToothFinal_co-payA copay, short for co-payment, is a fixed amount you pay for a medical or dental service at the time of the visit. It does not necessarily cover the entire cost of your visit.

Copays are less frequently used in dental insurance and are more common in medical insurance.

Examples:

  • You might pay a $50 copay for a medical doctor’s visit, but dental insurance often uses co-insurance and deductibles instead.

FAQs

  • Is a copay the same as co-insurance? No. A copay is a fixed amount you pay at a provider’s office when you receive medical or dental care. Co-insurance is a percentage of the cost.
  • Why are copays rare in dental insurance? Dental insurance plans often use co-insurance and deductibles for sharing costs.
