Americans are Using Too Much Toothpaste

Revised April 2021

The ads got it wrong.

Contrary to what you see on TV and in magazines, you don’t need a full-length ribbon of toothpaste on your toothbrush. Yet Americans are using way too much toothpaste

When it comes to using certain dental products, size really does matter.

To fight plaque and prevent build-up, use the right amounts:

  • Toothpaste
  • Excessive toothpaste use can damage the tooth enamel. Apply only a pea-sized amount to your toothbrush before brushing.

  • Mouthwash
  • One study found people who used antibacterial mouthwash more than 3 times a day had an increased risk for mouth and throat cancers. Overuse can also dry your mouth out, upping your odds of bad breath. Rinse your mouth no more than twice a day for 30 seconds.

  • Floss
  • No one likes a floss waster! Floss at least once a day using no more than about 18 inches of floss.

Your smile and your budget will thank you for using the right amounts of toothpaste, mouthwash and floss. Less is more.
