UA FS Dental Hygiene Clinic
From the #deltadentalARFoundation: “Are you seated comfortably?” In a dental office, the question is more than a polite inquiry.
Dentists and dental hygienists depend on updated equipment to provide optimal care. That’s why the Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation approved a 2021 #communitygrant for the University of Arkansas Fort Smith Dental Hygiene Clinic to help upgrade some of its operatories.
The clinic purchased three high-tech dental chairs, several lead aprons, and some PPE (personal protective equipment) with the funding.
The difference was immediate.
“This state-of-the-art equipment is allowing our students to learn in the best possible environment while providing our patients a safe and comfortable experience,” said Dr. Virginia Hardgraves, executive director of the UAFS Dental Hygiene Program. “Already we’ve noticed an increase in patient satisfaction and student efficiency thanks to Delta Dental’s contribution, and we couldn’t be more thankful.”
The UAFS Dental Hygiene Program launched in 1999 as one of only two such programs in Arkansas. To date, about 280 students have graduated.
Dental hygienists fulfill two key roles: They provide prevention and treatment of oral diseases through cleanings and x-rays, and they educate the patients on oral hygiene. Typically, they perform their work while the patient is seated in the dental chair—hence the importance of proper equipment.
The new chairs can be amended for patients with disabilities, particularly wheelchair users. They accommodate left-handed dental professionals, and they are much easier to clean than the old ones, Dr. Hardgraves noted.
Who knew dental chairs played such a big role in restoring smiles?
